Funny thing is literally the exact same joke could have been made about Squirtle. But it was spared the indignity, because Pokemon was a new concept at the time, and Squirtle was only one out of 151.

No, it couldn't. Because even as a kid, you understood what a Portmanteau is. And Squirt + Turtle is more clever than a easy typo.
